A previous (unsuccessful) attempt to get permission to build on this site

Over 30 years ago, in April 1972, application 261/72 was submitted to planners to build a "housing estate" on the fields that are once more under threat.

The planning authority REFUSED the application on the following grounds:

1. The proposal would extend the village beyond reasonable limits and have an injurious effect on the countryside.

2. Approval of this proposal could give rise to further applications in respect of land fronting Brandy Cove Lane. The total effect of which would result in an unwarranted extension of Bishopston onto land which should remain free of development.

3. The additional traffic which would be generated by the proposed development would increase the hazards which exist at the junction of Pwlldu Lane, Brandy Cove Road and Pyle Corner.

4. The site is within 100 yards of the sewage disposal works.

5. The proposal would take out of agricultural use land which should continue to be used for that purpose.

(There was also an issue related to proposed surface water drainage at the site.)

Every one of the above reasons 1 - 5 is still valid today - probably more so than ever!
